Simple CCTV with a webcam in Linux

Thanks to motion software you can configure a CCTV system.

Follow the instructions to install it (basically sudo apt install motion in your Linux system) .

Install the video4linux utilities (sudo apt-get install v4l-utils) and check your webcam by executing:

v4l2-ctl --list-devices

Integrated Camera: Integrated C (usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.6):
	/dev/video2
	/dev/video3

webcam: WEBCAM (usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1):
	/dev/video0
	/dev/video1

Then, you must configure it:

  1. Create a directory in your $HOME directory to store the log and the configuration file:
    mkdir ~/.motion
  2. Create a directory for your CCTV footage:
    mkdir -p ~/Pictures/cctv
  3. With your preferred editor, create the config file:
    gedit ~/.motion/motion.conf
  4. Use the default config file in /etc/motion/motion.conf, or copy and paste this configuration if you want:
    • Generate only videos
    • Send them to your sftp server (in my case, my user connect automatically to the sftp with a key, so no need of password)
# Rename this distribution example file to motion.conf
#
# This config file was generated by motion 4.3.2
# Documentation: /usr/share/doc/motion/motion_guide.html
#
# This file contains only the basic configuration options to get a
# system working. There are many more options available. Please
# consult the documentation for the complete list of all options.
